Battles Lateralis Shiraz 2022

$100.00 excl. GST

Who: Battles Wine
Where: Swinney Vineyard | Frankland River, Western Australia
What: Shiraz

It’s no coincidence that the Swinney Vineyard is the fruit source for many great producers: its gravelly loam with ironstone veins, coupled with meticulous farming & balanced yields, provide the perfect canvas. A large percentage of whole berries, along with 15% whole cluster,  were retained for fermentation. It spent 11 months in a combination of puncheons (50% new) and 2 year old barrique.

An incredibly complex wine: a combination of red & black fruits and florals, with an underpinning of ferrous earth, nori-like salinity and savoury spices.

Description

Battles Wines is a collaboration between Lance Parkin and Kris Ambrozkiewicz. Both Lance and Kris have backgrounds as winemakers, with Lance still working in the Swan Valley and Kris working in wine sales in Perth. Lance spent 14 years at Houghton’s, before its sale in 2019 spurred a shake up of the snow globe—a move that resulted in Battles being born.

Working with a selection of growers & sites across Margaret River, Great Southern, Geographe and the often overlooked Perth Hills, their focus is upon creating wines which reflect the great regions & vineyard in which they’re grown. A showcase on what is possible through a gentler hand in the cellar, as an embrace of modern Australian styles centered around freshness and vibrancy.

In just a handful of years, they’ve already received some incredible recognition: twice awarded Shiraz of the Year from Australia’s leading wine publications, and scores which put them in the upper tier across their regions. Assisted by Richard Healy (Head of Wine for Neil Perry’s venues) on the east coast of Australia, this triple threat is one to pay increasing attention towards.

“…some of the most exciting wines to spring from Western Australia—and indeed Australia. Stop at nothing to find them.” – Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate
