Battles Granitis Shiraz 2023

$85.00 excl. GST

Who: Battles Wine
Where: Christos Vineyard| Perth Hills, Western Australia
What: Shiraz

The rolling granite & clay hills of the Christos Vineyard clearly embody the naming of this wine. To highlight the granitic nature, a portion of the fruit was kept as whole-bunches (15%) with 5% Viognier included, to add further vibrancy and lift. Matured in seasoned 500L puncheons for 10 months.

2020 won Shiraz of the Year, from the Halliday Wine Companion–a remarkable feat from Battles’ only second vintage and a region that is generally overlooked by both professionals and consumers alike. 2023, just like further south in Frankland River, provided a near perfect set of conditions throughout the growing season.

Description

Battles Wines is a collaboration between Lance Parkin and Kris Ambrozkiewicz. Both Lance and Kris have backgrounds as winemakers, with Lance still working in the Swan Valley and Kris working in wine sales in Perth. Lance spent 14 years at Houghton’s, before its sale in 2019 spurred a shake up of the snow globe—a move that resulted in Battles being born.

Working with a selection of growers & sites across Margaret River, Great Southern, Geographe and the often overlooked Perth Hills, their focus is upon creating wines which reflect the great regions & vineyard in which they’re grown. A showcase on what is possible through a gentler hand in the cellar, as an embrace of modern Australian styles centered around freshness and vibrancy.

In just a handful of years, they’ve already received some incredible recognition: twice awarded Shiraz of the Year from Australia’s leading wine publications, and scores which put them in the upper tier across their regions. Assisted by Richard Healy (Head of Wine for Neil Perry’s venues) on the east coast of Australia, this triple threat is one to pay increasing attention towards.

“…some of the most exciting wines to spring from Western Australia—and indeed Australia. Stop at nothing to find them.” – Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate
