Battles Estate Shiraz 2023

Who: Battles Wine
Where: Perth Hills & Geographe, Western Australia
What: Shiraz

The Christos vineyard is one of the most exceptional sites of the Perth Hills; made of granite and clay soils, with rolling hills. The Berrecas Vineyard in Donnybrook (Geographe) is planted on an east-facing slope, with gravelly loam soils. The block has good elevation further aiding to lower day time temperatures. Across both parcels, a high percentage of whole berries were retained. Only a small portion of new barrels (one 500L puncheon) to keep a focus on the fruit vibrancy. Bottled after 9 months in barrel.

Certainly not the first regions which jump to people’s minds when thinking of top quality Shiraz, but it goes to show what hidden gems can be found.

“On the nose, the wine shows an abundance of sweet dark fruit: raspberry and mulberry, scraped vanilla pod and dark chocolate. In the mouth, the wine is silky and supple, with a flow of silty tannins that shape the fruit through the finish.” – Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (96 points)

Description

Battles Wines is a collaboration between Lance Parkin and Kris Ambrozkiewicz. Both Lance and Kris have backgrounds as winemakers, with Lance still working in the Swan Valley and Kris working in wine sales in Perth. Lance spent 14 years at Houghton’s, before its sale in 2019 spurred a shake up of the snow globe—a move that resulted in Battles being born.

Working with a selection of growers & sites across Margaret River, Great Southern, Geographe and the often overlooked Perth Hills, their focus is upon creating wines which reflect the great regions & vineyard in which they’re grown. A showcase on what is possible through a gentler hand in the cellar, as an embrace of modern Australian styles centered around freshness and vibrancy.

In just a handful of years, they’ve already received some incredible recognition: twice awarded Shiraz of the Year from Australia’s leading wine publications, and scores which put them in the upper tier across their regions. Assisted by Richard Healy (Head of Wine for Neil Perry’s venues) on the east coast of Australia, this triple threat is one to pay increasing attention towards.

“…some of the most exciting wines to spring from Western Australia—and indeed Australia. Stop at nothing to find them.” – Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate
