Bendito Destino Navazal Clarete 2022

Who: Bendito Destino
Where: Ribera del Duero, Spain
What: Rosé

This is a plot that belongs to the oldest winegrower in Canalejas de Peñafiel, nicknamed 'Secundino'. It is a plot co-planted with Albillo, Tempranillo, Alarije, Bobal. Secundino, at 92 years old, is a living legend in the village and has helped us a lot in everything we do, guiding us with his wisdom and knowledge of wines from the past. We made Clarete more or less because of him, as we felt the need to keep the tradition alive, such a historic wine in the Ribera del Duero region.

This Clarete is a tribute to him, for sharing all these wonderful stories of how wines were made in his time. By far the best Clarete we have made so far, a wine with density, power but an uplifting nature that balances weight with elegance and complexity.

This is our time capsule for a trip back to a zero technology era. Full malolactic and only one racking after 2 years in a used 500L barrel.
Production: 681 bottles

Terry Kandylis has had an illustrious career as a sommelier that has seen him running wine programs at some of the UK’s most famed institutions including 67 Pall Mall, The Fat Duck and the Noble Rot group. He won UK’s Best Sommelier in 2015, and Greece’s Best Sommelier in 2016—until the pandemic came along and threw a spanner in the works.

A detour to Ribera del Duero en route to the Canary Islands in late 2020 led Terry to some of the most historic (and abandoned) vineyards he had ever seen. As his excitement grew, he worked with the oldest vigneron in the village of Canalejas de Penafiel to develop greater insights to the region and began planning to revitalise these plots. This led to the formation of Bendito Destino. Today, 40% of the domaine’s holdings are vines over 100 years old.

Terry applies a gentle touch in the cellar; spontaneous fermentation, gentle extraction of a combination of whole berry and whole bunch, minimal use of new oak. Utmost respect while working through the parcels culminates in a series of 6 single vineyard bottlings, including a single vineyard white bottling of a centenarian Albillo.

Bendito Destino, or ‘Blessed Destiny’, represents how Terry feels that he is blessed to be able to work with these vineyards and their history. The wines demonstrate the potential of Ribera del Duero, with detailed layers of flavour and balance while retaining vibrancy, life and nuance.

Bendito Destino Amphora 2022

Who: Bendito Destino
Where: Ribera del Duero, Spain
What: Tempranillo, Grenache

Fruit from the Fuentecebolla vineyard. Whole bunches were placed at the base of an amphora, topped with hand-destemmed fruit. A CO₂-rich, anaerobic environment triggered intracellular fermentation, aided by the vessel’s shape and porosity. After 41 days, the wine was pressed in a vertical basket press and moved to three second-fill Hermitage barrels.

Bendito Destino El Greco Albillo Mayor 2022

Who: Bendito Destino
Where: Ribera del Duero, Spain
What: Albillo

As a Greek, and good friend of the late Haridimos Hatzidakis, this wine is made with the Assyrtiko variety in mind. Reminiscent of Haridimo’s wines, ‘El Greco’ spent 2,5 yrs in a Burgundian 228L Francois Freres barrel, with only one racking and no batonnage, being bottled in August 2024. This wine shows the flexibility of the Albillo Mayor grape, which can be made in various winemaking styles, and its adaptability to a hot and dry vintage.
Assyrtiko can be quite rich, with a tendency to oxidation–hence back in time they were making the Nykteri as a style similar to the Vino de Pasto de Jerez. I found out from Willy Perez that Albillo was planted in the wider area of Jerez back due to the oxidation elements, giving nutty and rich wines. Hence I thought I will play in oxidation, similar to a Nykteri from Santorini

Its name is double symbolic to us, referring to the great Dominikos Theotokopoulos or ‘El Greco’ painter, the architect of the Spanish Renaissance.

Bendito Destino Los Castaños 2022

Who: Bendito Destino
Where: Ribera del Duero, Spain
What: Tempranillo, Garnacha dominant blend

This wine is the blend of our two most prestigious vineyards (La Cabaña and El Olmar) that in that year gave us a superior result. 2022 was marked by extreme heat and drought and phenolic ripening was uneven. I was cautious about using whole bunches and wanted to tame the beast of the vintage before our eyes, so I made part of this wine as a deep-coloured Claret that was aged separately and blended back into the rest.

The name refers to the people of Canalejas de Peñafiel and with this wine I want to express my gratitude for the generations before us taking care of these amazing plots and for passing us the baton to continue working with these fantastic vineyards.
