When — 2015

Showcasing the hallmarks of a sunny & ripe vintage with dense red & black berry flavours sitting atop an earthy sous-bois character.

2015 represented warm and sunny growing conditions which were saved by cool nights and periodic rain throughout the growing season. It began with a sunny and dry spring followed by ideal flowering conditions. Heat spikes in the summer were alleviated by rain at the right times and diurnal relief to avoid overly heavy acidity in the wines. Harvest was an early start, beginning in the last week of August for most growers.

Foillard’s fastidious work on the vines mitigated the at times harsh conditions where less vigilant producers produced heavy and overly rich wines. The wine wears the hallmarks of the vintage quite clearly, with an alcohol level of 14%, yet it retains a freshness and vibrant acidity without feeling heavy. A wine that is only just beginning to come into its drinking window, it will take  time to unfurl in the glass.

2016 was marked by three separate hail storms for Beaujolais, with the majority of the northern parts of the region affected to the point of almost total crop losses. The southern parts of Beaujolais were spared from the hail storms; Foillard was quite fortunate to have only suffered moderate losses across his holdings. The turbulent weather at the beginning of  the vintage was balanced by an easier and more generous summer of balanced sunshine and rain throughout the growing season.

The resulting wines from 2016 have a generosity of fruit driven characters, with a sense of lightness when compared against the concentration of the preceding 2015s. The wines have an openness to them aromatically, making them beautifully approachable now, with delicate yet  ample and delightful structure.

Jean Foillard Morgon 'Côte du Py' 2017

What — Gamay
Where — Beaujolais, France
When — 2017

Built around structure, with ripe tannins and balanced grip with a long & pure finish.

Beaujolais was initially spared severe frosts that affected many parts of France in April, however the region was once again ravaged by catastrophic hail storms across most of the region later in the year. Within Morgon, producers faced losses of up to 80% of their crop with the hail that came through in July. The fickle temper of Mother Nature was made even more apparent with the rest of the summer largely problem free with great growing conditions.

Foillard’s ‘Côte du Py’ 2017 has a vibrant fruit expression to it, with powdery structured tannins and a fresh acidity. It is beginning to come into its full expression currently and will be rewarded with some further time in the bottle. It will evolve and open up as it goes into glasses.

Description

Soon after taking over his father’s domaine in 1980, Jean Foillard set about revolutionising the world’s view of Beaujolais and its potential for wines of depth, structure and quality. Together with several other local vignerons, Jean Foillard followed the teachings of Jules Chauvet a traditionalist who opposed the commercial nature of what was happening within the region. These included the use of old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration. The end result allowed Morgon to express itself naturally; without the bubblegum and banana aromas of so many other Beaujolais available today. Its rustic structure, spicy notes and mineral-laden backbone are what a real Morgon is all about.

Majority of the estate’s vineyards are planted on the Côte du Py, the famed slope outside the town of Villié-Morgon and the pride of Morgon. These granite and schist soils sit on an alluvial fan at the highest point above the town and impart great complexity. They are amongst the most iconic slopes within Beaujolais. The vines range up to 90 years old, with the wines raised in used barrels from Burgundy. The wines are seen to have more parallels with Burgundian Pinot Noir than the commonplace ‘bubblegum’ wines of Beaujolais, with incredible aging potential as opposed to the regular vin de soif of many.
