Duplessis Chablis 2019

What — Chardonnay
Where — Chablis, France
When — 2019

Expressive of Chablis’ telltale oyster shell nose with delicate white flowers, through to orchard fruits becoming more apparent on the palate.

Duplessis’ trio of Chablis AC parcels are located facing the Premier Cru of Vaillons. These plots combined produce a wine with a lively minerality and a mesmerising array of white floral notes—both capturing and enhancing the site’s expression.

The quality of the farming here is evident with a vibrancy of both fruit and mineral expression on the nose, which follows through with layered definition. The purity of fruit and minerality is kept front and centre, with aging only in stainless steel. 2 years have passed since the vintage, yet Duplessis is only now releasing it—a testament to their approach of using time as a key to quality.

All things considered, this Chablis 2019 is a far cry from the often limp and insipid Chablis village examples.

Duplessis Chablis Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2018

What — Chardonnay
Where — Chablis, France
When — 2018

Densely packed with fresh citrus, white pepper, crushed rock minerality—all atop a distinctly chalky character built around textural complexity with a long finish.

Duplessis’ collection of envied holdings continues with five plots within the famed Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre. Running contiguous to the east from the Grand Cru hill, Montée de Tonnerre holds a quality that parallels many plots of Grand Cru standards. The site is known for wines of incredible aging potential, with deep mineral  expression and layers of flavour. Their plots sit facing south-east, on clay rich soils.

Like the Premier Cru Montmains, the wine sees 12 months in older oak with additional time in tank before bottling. Lilian believes that an extended élevage prior to bottling allows the wines to come together even better, as a more complete picture of their terroir.

Duplessis Chablis Premier Cru Montmains 2018

What — Chardonnay
Where — Chablis, France
When — 2018

Ripe green apples, nashi pear and rich, rocky minerality loaded with energy and aging potential.

Lilian has two parcels within Montmains, both of which are around 60 years old. They sit on a rich clay-limestone soil, the parcels being roughly one hectare each. These are vinified separately, using natural yeasts in stainless steel and spending 12 months on lees, before 6 months in barrel.

Whilst Montée de Tonnerre often sits at the pinnacle of the Premier Crus for most producers, Duplessis hold their Montmains as equal to Lilian’s parcel of Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos in terms of being the longest-lived wines of the domaine—this is a truly stunning example of the estate’s quality.

Description

Lilian Duplessis continues on the work of his father Gerard, as the fifth generation of the family estate, which dates way back to 1895. Since assuming his role as head of the estate in 1999, Lilian has turned the estate to organic viticulture; it is now certified by EcoCert—a rarity in Chablis! The 8 hectare estate is entirely within Chablis and Petit Chablis AOCs, with majority of their holdings in Premier Cru sites.

Wines are handled with patience and allowed to mature for as long as required before being released to the market. For instance, the Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines are bottled after a second winter, only when Lilian feels they are truly coming together. They adopt a tailored approach with each individual terroir and the resulting wines are treated differently in the cellars with the elevage. It is precisely this relentless prioritising of quality that has earned Duplessis a loyal cult following.

The wines express the hallmarks of great and classic Chablis, showcasing a deep mineral expression with the individuality of site shining through.
