Arnot Roberts Rosé of Touriga Nacional

What — Rosé (Touriga Nacional blend)
Where — California, USA
When — 2020

Delicate pale salmon in colour, with a light bodied freshness carried through by flavours of white peach, ripe melon, blood orange balanced against a savoury touch and salinity running through the palate.

Touriga Nacional is a grape variety not known to many, as it is most commonly used as part of the blend for the production of Port and rarely seen on a wine label. Arnot Roberts’ Rosé of Touriga Nacional runs completely in the opposite direction of anything resembling Port, with a very dry and crisp expression of Rosé. It’s picked early, resulting in moderate alcohol, with a refreshing grapefruit-like acidity. The grapes are grown at over 1,300 feet east of Mendocino Country which helps to retain a freshness that both Duncan and Nathan strive for.

Very little is produced each year, with only a small parcel making its way to Singapore. Beat the heat and humidity with this crisp and refreshing wine that goes perfectly alongside a wide array of food.

Arnot Roberts El Dorado Gamay

What — Gamay
Where — California, USA
When — 2019

Vibrant red cherry and brambly blackberries, with wild herbs and violets. Its vibrant line of acidity runs through the palate over a supple texture.

Arnot Roberts sources their Gamay from two high elevation vineyards in the Sierra foothills that are anchored in decomposed granite. Gamay feels very much at home on these granitic slopes; the same bedrock which you find in Beaujolais, its native home.

To retain the ‘light on its feet’ approach, it is fermented with 100% whole cluster and partial carbonic maceration. No new oak is used on the wine, which helps to retain the vibrancy of the fruit and fermentation expression. As with all of the Arnot Roberts wines,  ‘less is more’ in the winemaking, with minimal additions throughout.  These choices lead to a youthfully approachable expression of Gamay, with great depth of flavour and structure. In the heat of Singapore, a light chill to the wine won’t hurt at all and help to retain the pure fruited nature of the wine.

Arnot Roberts Sonoma Coast Syrah

What — Syrah
Where — California, USA
When — 2019

Concentrated yet elegant flavours of plum, red berries, wild herbs and cracked black pepper with a meatiness counterbalancing the fruit components.

The Arnot Roberts Syrah is made from a collection of vineyards in cool-climate pockets along the Sonoma Coast. It’s designed as Duncan and Nathan’s interpretation of what is possible for Syrah of the region; quite the antithesis of the style commonly associated with the area —with a restraint in alcohol and a higher level of acidity. A common theme with Arnot Roberts is the use of whole bunch in fermentation which adds a degree of vibrancy and lift to the wine. The fruit remains unmarked by new oak or overt winemaking artefacts and sees just under a year in oak and concrete before bottling.

The 2005 vintage was a turning point for the style of Arnot Roberts, with their Syrah being very much emblematic of the changes that occurred in their style of wine production.

As with their Gamay, this expression of Syrah certainly won’t be hurt by a light chill to balance against Singapore’s weather.

Description

Arnot-Roberts was founded in Healdsburg, California in 2001 by childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts.

The focus of Arnot-Roberts is to produce distinctive, site-driven wines that highlight the nature of the unique terroirs in which the grapes are grown. The journey to this end has led Duncan and Nathan to seek out vineyards throughout Northern California and now includes incredible sites in Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Rita Hills, Clearlake and Sierra Foothills.

The fundamental goal of Arnot-Roberts is simple: producing the most honest and expressive wines possible. Presented here are a limited selection of their approachable and incredibly tropics-friendly wines.
