SC Pannell

What — Syrah
Where — Adelaide Hills, Australia
When — 2016

Black olive tapenade with vibrant yet restrained black fruit characters

Born into the Moss Wood family of Margaret River fame, Steve Pannell had a pre-determined path leading to the wine industry. He earned his stripes not only from the best producers in Australia but from around the world. Through vintages in Burgundy, Barolo, Piedmont and Priorat and his role as Chief Red Winemaker at Hardy’s, Steve’s wealth of experience led to the creation of his eponymous label in 2004. His goal is to create wines that are “made to taste like grapes; like they come from somewhere rather than of how they’re made” – a defining expression of purity and unencumbered fruit.

Steve’s recognition in the wine world has seen him awarded as International Red Winemaker of the Year 1999 by the International Wine Challenge, Gourmet Traveller’s Winemaker of the Year 2015 and a slew of other awards including the Jimmy Watson for his 2013 Adelaide Hills Syrah. The Jimmy Watson is awarded to the ‘Best Young Red Wine’ in Australia at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards; arguably Australia’s greatest wine trophy for a red wine.

Luke Lambert

What — Syrah
Where — Yarra Valley, Australia
When — 2017

Red berry fruits with a touch of stalks on the nose leading to a soft, silky palate

Luke Lambert has set himself apart as a prominent voice of a generation redefining the Yarra Valley. Not chasing trends, Luke’s approach favours the production of pure fruited wine through the use of large format oak to retain fruit characteristics. This also drives his interest in growing on sites with cooler climates to retain freshness and elegance in his wines. The site for his Syrah comes from the south-west pocket of the Yarra Valley, one of the coolest within the region. His wines are designed to display what is possible when applying a deft touch towards winemaking.

Coming from a “10 out of 10 vintage”, in Luke’s own words, his 2017 Syrah is the perfect sum of its parts – long hangtime for the berries allowing full flavour development, his highest percentage of whole-bunch fermentation (to date) to add further complexity to the nose & palate, wild yeast fermentation and increased usage of large oak foudre to retain purity of the fruit. A master of subtlety and craft, Luke lets his wines speak for themselves.

Domenica

What — Shiraz
Where — Beechworth, Australia
When — 2014

Classically structured Shiraz with a nod to the Northern Rhone's granite & pepper characters

For 13 years, Peter Graham cut his teeth at the legendary producer Giaconda, known for producing some of Australia’s greatest whites & reds. In that time, he also worked on vintages in California and collected experience throughout his time in Europe. The vineyard for Domenica is farmed using organic practices, and lays on Beechworth’s “Golden Mile” at around 460m elevation. The warm growing season, rich granitic soils and Peter’s intricate knowledge of the vineyard allow for incredible wines that walk the knife’s edge between power and refinement.

A traditionalist with his winemaking approach, Peter’s Shiraz spends over a year and a half in French barrels before bottling. A key component to the wines are that they are never rushed to market and instead only released when they are truly ready to drink. His winemaking approach applies whole bunch inclusion and usage of new oak. The wines demonstrate the complexity that is expressed with fruit, mineral & savoury undertones.

Description

Australian Shiraz is largely synonymous with rich, syrupy alcoholic monsters from the Barossa Valley with high octane alcohol levels and large licks of new oak to round them out. However, if you scratch beneath the surface, a myriad of styles and expressions emerge. Australia may be the “Sunburnt Country” but finesse and refinement can still be valid adjectives when you look in the right places. A celebration of medium and full-bodied Shiraz, this bundle shows you the way.
