Description
Graacher Himmelreich translates as ‘Kingdom of Heaven’—telling of the amount of reverence given to the site by vignerons. It directly borders on the southern edge of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard; in warmer years like 2018, it becomes nearly equal in quality to that of its neighbour.
The site sits on a combination of weathered clay and blue slate soils, on a steep incline. The large 87 hectare vineyard has a south-west exposure, with deeper soils than that of Wehlener Sonnenuhr—an excellent water reserve for hot and dry growing seasons.
Graacher Himmelreich’s combination of variables result in wines that are often more accessible when slightly younger, with more of a citrus signature to the fruit expression of the wine. A distinctive slate minerality shines through the wines of the site.
