Naudin-Ferrand Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune 'Orchis Mascula'

What — Pinot Noir
Where — Burgundy, France
When — 2016

A concentration of red fruit characters married with some savoury spices

Claire Naudin’s family has been working the vineyards in Burgundy since the 1500s, with Claire herself leading the domaine since 1994. Claire’s approach & style to her winemaking very much resembles herself: transparent and open. She believes in healthy vineyards, having incorporated a number of biodynamic principles into the vineyards with a minimal intervention approach in the cellars. 2016 was an unfortunate vintage where Naudin-Ferrand lost around 70% of its crop, leading to the production of wines with inherent concentrations higher than her regular style. Borrowing the scientific name of the early purple orchid, the Orchis Mascula is a blend from 3 vineyards which is made with 100% whole bunch fermentation, without any added sulphur during the winemaking process.

Fanny Sabre Bourgogne Rouge

What — Pinot Noir
Where — Burgundy, France
When — 2017

Light and fresh style of Bourgogne Pinot, with an expressive fruit forward character

Fanny Sabre did not plan on being a winemaker, but it seems life had a better plan. When she was studying law, the passing of her father brought Fanny back to the domaine, where she reconnected with her roots and adopted an organic approach focused on harmony with nature. The estate now works organically, eschewing herbicides and practicing only manual ploughing between the rows. No synthetic chemicals are added, with only natural treatments used during the process. Her Bourgogne Rouge uses whole bunch fermentation to add perfume and fragrance to the wine. With her philosophy of minimal additions through the winemaking process, Sabre’s wines spark intrigue with their expressive fruit forward character.

Mee Godard Morgon 'Corcelette'

What — Gamay
Where — Beaujolais, France
When — 2016

Concentration of red & black fruits & savoury spice, with incredible structure

Born in South Korea, Mee was raised in France before venturing to the U.S. to study biochemistry with a specialisation in wine science. Following her studies, she returned to France where she created Domaine Mee Godard in 2013. Quickly establishing herself as one of the hardest working vignerons in the region, she is most often found either amongst the vines or in the cellar. The vines from her parcel of Corcelette have an average age of 70 years and are more densely planted than commonly seen within the region. Mee’s style is one of structure and concentration, resulting in wines with great potential to be laid down for a long time (only if you can resist drinking them now).
